Wallace, Lew
Lew Wallace (1827-1905) foi escritor, militar, advogado e diplomata dos Estados Unidos. Na carreira militar e política, serviu na Guerra de Anexação do Texas e na Guerra de Secessão (com as forças daUnião), foi governador do Território do Novo México (1878-1881) e ministro encarregado de negócios na Turquia (1881-1885). Há algumas lendas sobre a fé do general Lew Wallace e sobre como escreveu um romance épico religioso. Mas o próprio autor conta – no prefácio de seu livro O primeiro Natal (1899) – que foi apenas depois de uma conversa no trem com o agnóstico Robert G. Ingersoll que percebeu que precisava conhecer mais sobre sua própria fé, pois apesar de ter frequentado a Igreja Metodista ao longo de sua vida, sempre foi indiferente à religião e possuía poucas certezas sobre o assunto. Resolveu então escrever um livro para ter uma motivação a mais para o estudo das Escrituras, o que resultou em sua obra-prima, Ben-Hur – Uma história dos tempos de Cristo (1880), e em “uma convicção que representa a crença absoluta em Deus e na divindade de Cristo”. |
