Nasceu na Inglaterra, teve uma breve passagem na marinha, tentou a carreira como artesão e trabalhou no governo britânico como cobrador de impostos. Essa experiência moldou sua visão crítica sobre o sistema parlamentar da Grã-Bretanha.Em 1774, imigrou para os Estados Unidos, onde passou a se dedicar ao jornalismo e à escrita de artigos, poemas e panfletos que impressionaram e incitaram debates políticos e a revolução norte-americana.As ideias do autor refletiam a retórica dos direitos humanos transnacionaisda era do Iluminismo. Paine era conhecido por posições contundentes eargumentos bem fundamentados, o que atraiu tanto inúmeros admiradoresquanto ferrenhos adversários. |
