Shaun Tan cresceu em Perth e trabalha como artista, escritor e cineasta em Melbourne. O curta-metragem de animação The Lost Thing (2010), feito em parceria com Andrew Ruhemann e adaptação do seu livro de mesmo nome, ganhou o Oscar de Melhor Curta de Animação.
