Dominic Lieven dedicou-se durante anos ao estudo da Rússia imperial e é autor do aclamado livro Empire: The Russian Empire and Its Rivals. Rússia contra Napoleão - A batalha pela Europa, de 1807 a 1814 foi o vencedor do Wolfson History Prize em 2010. Lieven é professor da London School of Economics e tem uma cadeira na British Academy.
