Gogol, Nikolai
Nikolai Vassílievitch Gógol nasceu em 1809 em Sorotchíntsi, na Ucrânia. Em 1829 muda-se para Petersburgo, onde publica os poemas "Itália" e Hanz Küchelgarten, de caráter romântico. Em 1830 frequenta a Academia de Belas-Artes, dá aulas em um colégio para meninas e considera tornar-se ator. Com a ajuda de amigos consegue um cargo de professor na Universidade de São Petersburgo. Baseado em lembranças da Ucrânia, elabora os dois volumes de Serões numa granja perto de Dikanka, publicados em 1831 e 1832 e recebidos com entusiasmo pela crítica. Deixa a universidade e dedica-se integralmente à carreira de escritor, publicando em 1835 duas coletâneas de contos e novelas: Arabescos, que traz "Avenida Niévski", "Diário de um louco" e "O retrato"; e Mírgorod, que inclui "A briga dos dois Ivans" e o épico Tarás Bulba. Em algumas dessas obras já se dá a passagem dos temas rurais e folclóricos para os urbanos e fantásticos. No ano seguinte publica os contos "A carruagem" e "O nariz", além da comédia O inspetor geral, considerada um marco na história do teatro russo. Ainda em 1836 parte em viagem para o exterior, passando pela Suíça e França, e fixando residência em Roma. Se dedica então ao projeto de um ambicioso romance, Almas mortas, que seria publicado em 1842. No ano seguinte, em uma edição de suas obras completas, aparece pela primeira vez "O capote", um dos contos mais influentes da literatura russa. A última década de sua vida é marcada por crises de depressão e um ascetismo religioso exacerbado. Adoece constantemente, e em 1847 publica Trechos selecionados da correspondência com amigos, textos ensaísticos muito criticados por seu conservadorismo. Retoma então a redação da segunda parte de Almas mortas, iniciada ainda na década de 1840, mais queima todos os manuscritos em 1852, ano em que morre em Moscou. |
