Hoffmann, E. T. A.
Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffmann nasceu em Königsberg, na Prússia Oriental, em 1776. Desenvolveu carreira como jurista, atuando em tribunais de apelação em Berlim e em Varsóvia. Mas desde cedo já demonstrava inclinação para as artes, como pintura, teatro e, sobretudo, música clássica (era admirador de Mozart, de quem adotou o nome Amadeus em substituição a Wilhelm), passando a dedicar-se a tais paixões de modo integral a partir de 1808.Foi homenageado por Jacques Offenbach com a ópera Os contos de Hoffmann, baseado em três histórias do autor. De saúde permanentemente frágil, agravada pelo abuso de álcool, ele seguiu produzindo até o fim da vida, inclusive ditando a um escriba quando sua condição motora já estava comprometida por uma paralisia progressiva que se mostraria fatal. Faleceu de forma precoce em 25 de junho de 1822, aos quarenta e seis anos de idade. |
