Northup, Solomon
Solomon Northup nasceu em 10/07/1808, em Schroon (Atual Minerva), Nova Yourk, EUA. Seu pai, Mintus, depois de alforriado por determinação testamentária de seu senhor, o capitão Henry Northup, adquiriu algumas terras, preenchendo os requisitos para obter o direito ao voto, e pode dar certa educação aos filhos. Em 05/12/1829, Solomon casou-se com Anne Hampton, com quem teve três filhos. Cinco anos depois mudaram-se para Saratoga Springs, onde ele, um violinista talentoso, trabalhou como músico em hotéis locais. Todavia em 1841, em Washington, D.C, foi sequestrado, acorrentado e enviado ao Sul dos Estados Unidos, onde foi posto á venda em um leilão de escravos. No primeiro ano, trabalhou nos teares da fazenda do pastor Willian P. Ford, na Louisiana; em seguida, foi revendido ao cruel Edwin Epps. Após várias tentativas de fuga, que lhe renderam violentos castigos, obteve a ajuda do carpinteiro abolicionista Samuel Bass, retomou o contato com sua família e amigos e reconquistou sua liberdade em 1853. Daí em diante, engajou-se no movimento abolicionista, narrando sua história em palestras e ajudando na ferrovia clandestina que levava escravizados ao Canadá. Acredita-se que faleceu em 1863. |
