MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. foi um pastor protestante e ativista político norte-americano, que se tornou líder do movimento dos direitos civis nos Estados Unidos de 1955 até seu assassinato em 1968. A trajetória de King inspirou o mundo com sua luta pela igualdade racial a partir da prática da desobediência civil e da luta sem violência, inspirado em Henry Thoreau e em Mahatma Gandhi, respectivamente. Seu assassinato causou forte reação nas comunidades negras dos EUA e gerou manifestações em inúmeras cidades. King foi premiado postumamente com a Medalha Presidencial da Liberdade e a Medalha de Ouro do Congresso. Em 1973 foi criado o Martin Luther King Day, hoje feriado nacional pela memória e conscientização da persistente segregação racial. |
